B4. Persuasive
Grades 9-Diploma

Students write persuasive essays exhibiting logical reasoning and rhetorical techniques.

a. Employ a variety of persuasive techniques including anticipating, addressing, and refuting possible counterclaims in a thesis-driven logical argument to influence the opinions, beliefs or positions of others.

Rationale: Students will be reviewing persuasive techniques through self and peer reflection.


Assessment

Formative (Assessment for Learning)
*Conference: Instructors will meet with each student concerning the feedback on their essays. They will be offered the opportunity for the one-week full credit revision.
Blog: Students will blog about their feedback and conference.
Summative (Assessment of Learning)
*Blog: Students will talk to their peers about the papers as well. This information, coupled with the previous blog, will be used to create a lengthy , reflective blog.

Integration

Type II Technology: Students will be using a blog as their Type II.

Groupings

Aside from single conferences, students will be allowed to work in small groups to talk about their papers and feedback.

Absent Students:
If students are absent they are responsible for approaching either classmates, myself, or the online class resources in order to acquire missed work and assignments. I will be available for students in a time outside of class should they require and request it. A 24-hour notice should be given in order to be seen outside of class, unless prior or urgent arrangements have been made.

Maine Standards for Initial Teacher Certification and Rationale

Standard 3 - Demonstrates a knowledge of the diverse ways in which students learn and develop by providing learning opportunities that support their intellectual, physical, emotional, social, and cultural development.
Rationale:This is another highly social day, allowing students to expand with the aid of their peers, and in a time of self-reflection on the completion of the unit.
Standard 4 - Plans instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter, students, curriculum goals, and learning and development theory.
Rationale: This lesson covers all the subject matter, seeing as they will be reflecting on the unit.
Standard 5 - Understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies and appropriate technology to meet students’ needs.
Rationale: This lesson uses several MIs and styles of classroom management.
Standard 8 - Understands and uses a variety of formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and support the development of the learner.
Rationale: The conference and blog will offer a strong contrast between formal and informal assessments.

Teaching and Learning Sequence:

At the start of the day, students will receive their essays and the feedback. They will not yet receive the grades. In between talking with peers, music probably in the background, they will conference with the instructor. Once the conferences are complete, students will blog about their conference. This will be responded to only by the teacher. For homework, they will complete a blog consisting of their reflection for the entire unit. Included in the homework will be the requirement that students comment on at least three separate classmate's blogs wrote on different topics.
